Hawaiian Music as Perceived by Elite Non-Hawaiians

This is an article from the February 6, 2011 New York Times: "Dear Grammy, Is it Hawaiian Enough?" by Nate Chinen.  The article explains how Grammy nominations overlook the Hawaiian music scene in favor of mainstream interpretations. The article's focus on representation and appropriation links to academic research on how tourism industries across a long period of time created misperceptions of Native Hawaiian practices.

CDC Health Disparities and Inequalities Report

This is an important report that should be part of conversations on health care. Joseph Graves, a biologist, and author of the book, The Myth of Race, called health disparities the top civil rights issue of our time.

Loss at the Market

This particular article has stayed with me ever since I read an earlier version that had been posted--the bombing of the Finest Supermarket in Kabul, Afghanistan.  The story of the boy looking for his sister and, in the earlier version, a description and  photograph of sales clerks in the midst of the flames searching for their co-workers (actually running back into the flame-engulfed store) made the news story more real to me.  I think about these experiences in other parts of the world as I walk into the supermarket where I live. Unlike this story, the reporting on these incidents can make  if harder for those not in the midst of the events to connect with the people involved--especially if the news is delivered in a sound bite.  I wish the news source had not rewritten the story to focus on Blackwater (Xe), rather than the victims.  I will keep looking for that first version of story.
