This particular article has stayed with me ever since I read an earlier version that had been posted--the bombing of the Finest Supermarket in Kabul, Afghanistan. The story of the boy looking for his sister and, in the earlier version, a description and photograph of sales clerks in the midst of the flames searching for their co-workers (actually running back into the flame-engulfed store) made the news story more real to me. I think about these experiences in other parts of the world as I walk into the supermarket where I live. Unlike this story, the reporting on these incidents can make if harder for those not in the midst of the events to connect with the people involved--especially if the news is delivered in a sound bite. I wish the news source had not rewritten the story to focus on Blackwater (Xe), rather than the victims. I will keep looking for that first version of story.
